Aggressivity, a sign of evolution

The researchers concluded that an aggressive personality, temperamental and intolerant, could be a sign of evolution.

On the contrary, an attitude manifested by tolerance and generosity, should be an indicator of lower development, new study shows. Researchers have studied two different types of monkeys – the chimpanzee and less evolved but friendly, bonobo (pygmy chimpanzee), two of the closest relatives of man.

Chimpanzees are accepted as being more evolved than bonobo monkeys in terms of psychological development, social structure and behavior. But at the same time, chimps are even more aggressive, especially as they progress in age, when they become more and more intolerant with each other and very violent.

Bonobo adults instead, maintain their level of “kindness” and behavior in childhood or youth, concluded researchers at Harvard University. The two primates are very close genetically, and the clear differences between them are due to simple evolution, believes researcher Victoria Wobber.

Her team has submitted both the bonobo and the chimpanzees toa variety of skills tests, offering rewards to those who fulfill various tasks faster. They also included exercises of generosity and “begging”. In all cases, chimps have learned the task faster, always to their benefit.
